Regional EUDR Policy Manager (m-f-d) – based in Africa

The Scope
We are looking for an engaged Regional EUDR Policy Manager who brings solid expertise and a passion for FSC’s mission, to work with us in a multinational environment. You will lead activities and projects on integration of EUDR solutions, in close cooperation with relevant local stakeholders from the forestry sector, public, private, NGO sector.

Main Roles & Responsibilities
  • Point of contact and technical expert for the EUDR policy and its application in the context of the region.
  • Develop the EUDR conformity and support strategy for Africa and lead its implementation and related engagements in collaboration with FSC staff.  
  • Regional roll out and promotion in Africa of the FSC International tools in relation to the EU Deforestation Regulation (and, in the future, to other regulations).
  • Work with FSC central services and FSC regional team to contextualize and translate relevant material and assist countries in developing communication and training material.
  • Carry out capacity building activities, including webinars and training of stakeholders, and respond to enquiries.
  • Represent and support participation of FSC in relevant conferences and meetings to strengthen networking and partnership. 
  • Engage with relevant stakeholders such as Certificate Holders, Certification Bodies, industry associations, relevant government bodies for improved implementation of FSC standards. 
  • Attend and represent FSC in relevant forums including the forest policy community, EUDR community, annual staff meeting, regional meetings, webinars, etc.
  • Engage in the development and revision of FSC standards ensuring that stakeholders are informed and invited to engage at the appropriate times.
Your profile
  • Education and Training
    • University degree in forest policy, supply chain management or an equivalent combination of education/vocational training and work experience relevant for the roles and responsibilities of this function. 
  • Working Experience, Style and Skills: 
    • At least 5 years of professional experience in forest policy implementation and knowledge of EU regulations, ESG reporting or other relevant fields.
    • Knowledge and experience in medium to high level engagement with government officials, practitioners, and business owners. 
    • Sound understanding of the scope of FSC’s programs and activities, policies, and standards. 
    • A practical understanding of EUDR and its impact on Africa timber industry and forest managers.  
    • Understanding of the forest product value chain needs and market forces.   
    • Good time management and multitasking skills.
    • Ability to work independently and to achieve agreed objectives with little supervision. 
    • Service-oriented attitude to work, as well as a strong sense for diligence and accuracy.
    • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
       
  • Language & Communication Skills: 
    • Exemplary verbal and written communication skills that contribute to cohesive team efforts and decision making. 
    • Fluency in English (spoken and written) and knowledge of French is desirable. 

  • Digital Skills – good skills in the use of/experience with:
    • Standard software packages (MS Office).
    • Adaptive to use and discover new technological solutions.
       
  • Others:
    • Experience in working in a multi-cultural, multi-lingual, global team.
    • Experience in working in / with an NGO or Non-Profit Organization. 
    • Commitment to FSC’s mission and values. 
    • Demonstrated cultural awareness and sensitivity to the diversity of values, views and approaches to issues relevant to the FSC program by stakeholders around the world. 
    • Familiarity at the general level with the scope of FSC’s programs. 
    • Ability to represent FSC through his/her work with exemplary personal and professional authority and conduct.

The Fine Print
  • Location: Preferably Cameroon, Gabon, Republic of Congo, Kenya, Uganda, Namibia, South Africa; but this appointment can be home-based on those days when not attending meetings or field visits.  
  • Working Hours: Full time - 40 hours per week.
  • Duration: Service and Licence Agreement for Regional Consultants for 2 years (extension possible, subject to satisfactory performance).
  • Starting Date: As soon as possible.
  • Travel: Sporadic national and international travel is required.
